The senate, which was the main governing body of the country in the Late Periods of the Roman Republic, one of the most popular, curious and researched states of antiquity, gradually lost its oligarchic power against the commanders who led long campaigns and achieved great success. The Senate was in a position doomed to stand by the generals, each of whom had grown into an independent dictator, by convincing, persuading, or bribing them with sweet words.
